With only 2 years and 182 days, Joseph Harris-Birtill is the youngest member of Mensa: the exclusive society for people with exceptionally high intelligence.
Mensa, the largest and most recognized society in the world for Brainiacs, only admits those that score at the higher 2% in standardized IQ tests, a threshold that begins with a score of 132.
“We hope this realization can give it a sense of pride when it is old; it is a very unusual recognition and the credit is all its!” Her mother, Rose, who lives in the United Kingdom, told Guinness World Records.
Although his exact intellectual coefficient was not revealed, Joseph’s incredible intellectual pushed him to overcome the youngest member’s record, a title formerly with Isla McNabb-A Little Einstein of Kentucky who was honored in 2023 when he was 2 years and 195 days.
In order to adhere to adherence, individuals must demonstrate exceptional cognitive skills in various intellectual areas, including problem solving, logic and understanding of language.
“It soon became clear that it was an exceptional being; he first shot at five weeks, said his first word at the age of seven months and read his first book aloud from deck to cover at the age of 1,” said Rose.
“At the age of 2¼, he was reading aloud fluently for 10 minutes at a time, he could count up to 10 in five languages and could count forward and back to more than 100.”
His parents, both academic professionals, acknowledged at the beginning that Joseph’s capabilities could require more than the usual childhood environment.
Rose, an honorary professor at the University of London, and David, a senior professor at St Andrews University, contacted Mensa to support his son after it became clear that his advanced reading skills confirmed that his son was extraordinarily endowed.
The young man continues to impress his parents and those around him while learning new skills and talents.
Joseph is learning the Morse Code, for beginners, and even knows that the Greek alphabet has recently been interested in the periodic table, is learning the piano and has an advantage for new languages, solving math problems, cooking and flying paper planes. And, of course, playing with their toys.
“He loves a challenge and is really excited for complexity, whether learning chess or over new words and concepts that he has not found before,” Shar Rose.
His family is also proud of more than his intellectual. Her mother said she is “very kind and loving, confident and curious and incredibly determined.”
Mensa has been a critical resource for Joseph, offering not only intellectual stimulation, but also a community feeling with other exceptionally endowed children. “ It is a common mistake that everything is very easy for endowed children. But everyone needs adequate stimulation and understanding throughout their lives, and highly capable students can sadly have their unique talents attenuated by pressure to adapt to environments that have simply not been properly designed for them, ” said Rose.
“We are incredibly proud of him, not only for his intellectual, but also because of his kind and loving nature,” he added. “Everything he decides to do in life, we know he is capable of great things.”
